Trust issues almost always start with April Fools, when looks can lie and bites betray. Here are nine bites to serve your prank.
Psst, April Fools is peeking over the horizon! It may be non-official, nevertheless, it’s a fun day to reveal tasty little tricks from behind your kitchen drawer. Curiously, many places—in the UK, for example—it’s a tradition to play pranks only until noon as it’s bad luck to carry on after. Those who continued—late pranksters—are the “April Fool” themselves.
On the other hand, while we are dipping into what practical jokes and pranks there are, this article is eyeballing the tasty tricks and treats you can actually sneak by in the kitchen cupboard. Let’s pull a fast one, here are nine silly semblances in which what you see isn’t what you eat.

It’s no secret how classic a gag this is, but the trickiest of all? It has to be on April Fools’ Day. The only question is: which double sells it best? Practical picks like cream cheese, thick yogurt, and vanilla frosting slip through the cracks as your whites. The art lies in how you spread it before dropping in the yolk, to which a halved apricot or peach, rounded side-up, snuck in the middle, or even a butterscotch hard candy, meets the sunny mark.
If you’re thinking of throwing this sweet sunny side onto a slice of toast, try it with a pound cake slice instead! Add a sprinkling of poppy seeds as pepper, and it’s total tomfoolery at play.

Okay, okay, soup disguised as a milkshake sounds more than a little distasteful to sip through a straw, and even more daunting to look at (once the shrooms spill). But it’s still a hearty soup… just not in a bowl. “So what’s the soup?” Well, while sitting on what milkshake you’re going to be bubbling up, why not consider vanilla? In that case, you’d go for cauliflower soup. Chocolate milkshake? Mushroom soup cooks the closest to that visual with its mousy brown colour and thick consistency. Not to mention these two sips help impart that creamy texture you’re looking for.
Ladle it into your smoothie glasses, add a whipped cream swirl to the top, position a straw on the side, and your smoothie stunt is in session.

From savoury to sweet, this snack is about as iconic a “finger” food as there is—no bun intended. Though technically, it is a finger if you think about it. Tuck your whole banana—peeled—into a bun, with some suggesting trimming the ends to more accurately replicate a round hotdog. With a steady enough stroke, peanut butter has quite the colour to masquerade as a steamy dog. Then add tablespoons of strawberry spread for ketchup and kiwis as sweet relish, and you’re holding what looks like a dog, but peels like a banana.

April Fools antics can’t get any more effortless than this. This no-fry, all fun imitation is quick, easy, and yet another reason to own a crinkle fry cutter. Take your apples, peel them, and then crinkle-cut them into thick streaks, before adding in a slight spray of avocado oil. A brief bake in the oven (the longer the tan, the darker the skin), and this is how it gets its cinnamon cast. On the other hand, plating up apple chips as they are by themselves is bad to the core, too.
Remember to serve with ketchup or a dipping sauce on the side, this’ll really sell the golden show. It’s the not-so-French fry right there. Slice, fry, and surprise!

Onto a more savoury note, is it a surprising scoop to you that meat and mash can double as a hot fudge sundae? Here, the ice cream is built from mashed potatoes that are folded with butter and milk; while what the fudge imitates can depend on your appetite. Pick your pile: BBQ chicken and beef, pulled pork or beef, and brown gravy, too; all of these fit the dessert bill.
From here on, build it up in layers—scoop after scoop of mash and meat, repeating until your “sundae” is complete. Top it with a cherry tomato for that signature pop of red, and, if you’re feeling theatrical, drizzle some sauce around the inside of the glass beforehand to pull the whole illusion together

Imagine a juicy cut, seared to a succulent brown—or a slice that’s red and raw? Why not both? It’s not real meat we’re talking about; it’s cake! Chocolate cake brings its roasted colour, while white and red fondant is a cake in camouflage. Etching out grill marks might just earn yourself bonus points as well. Serve it with the apple fries, and it’s an April Fools’ signature signed all over.

Trust me when I say that this is one prank worth digging into—toothsome, clever, and just simply well-planted, really. Basically, it’s a dessert potted to deceive. Think a soft-serve scoop swirled into a plastic cup, then tucked inside a brown plastic plant pot, with Oreo crumbs or chocolate crunch plastered all over the ice cream like soil. The final flourish? A sprightly green sprig or an edible flower or two, turning it into a dig-in-if-you-dare challenge—except… maybe sweeter.

This one’s a little sneaky, and does require a bit more effort—but pull it off, and it’s a reward worth the trouble. Take some candy wrappers—those typical aluminium foil ones, the brighter the colour, the better—and a bunch of grapes. From here on out, you know what to do: just wrap each little gem up. Even better, swap out your Easter eggs for these tricksters—what we’d call an Easter egg swap. And just like that, the candy wrappers are easy enough to snag.

Last but not least, jelly as your juice cups. Brightly coloured and refreshing—who’s to say this isn’t a stroke of brilliance? All you need is a jelly packet and a few cups, and it’s a simple boil-and-blend journey. Pour into each cup, then leave them in the refrigerator to cool and set. Quick tip: pop the straw or spoon in early, not after. It’s a juice-to-Jell-O play, indeed.
