Chalet Returns To EQ Kuala Lumpur For A Limited-Time Revival This August

Patrick LohEat2 months ago

For just under three weeks, Chalet returns to EQ Kuala Lumpur with its signature tableside theatrics, Swiss classics, and a healthy serving of nostalgia.

There are restaurants you remember for the food. Then there are restaurants you remember for who was sitting across from you. For many local diners, Chalet belongs firmly in the second camp. Long before ‘experiential dining’ became marketing speak and open kitchens stole the spotlight, Chalet had already mastered the art of turning dinner into an occasion. It wasn’t unusual to watch a Caesar salad assembled beside your table, a dessert burst into flame, or a waiter wheel over an imposing duck press that looked more at home in a museum than a restaurant.

This August, those memories are stepping back into the spotlight. From 13 to 31 August, EQ Kuala Lumpur is reviving Chalet, the legendary restaurant from the original Hotel Equatorial KL, bringing back the polished service, classic European cooking, and tableside rituals that made it one of the city’s defining dining destinations.

Originally opened in 1974, Chalet became the backdrop for countless anniversaries, birthday dinners, business celebrations, and first dates. It wasn’t simply somewhere to eat but somewhere people dressed up for. Thankfully, the comeback isn’t interested in reinventing the classics. Instead, it embraces everything that made Chalet memorable in the first place.

The Raclette Traditionnelle

The Salade César is still prepared tableside, each ingredient coming together with the confidence of a performance that’s been perfected over decades. Raclette Traditionnelle stays true to its Swiss roots, with molten raclette cheese cascading over baby potatoes and cornichons—a reminder that sometimes the greatest luxury is simply hot cheese.

The mains continue the greatest-hits playlist. There’s the decadent Lobster Thermidor, alongside Chalet’s celebrated Canard à la Presse, where duck is prepared tableside using the traditional silver duck press. Equal parts culinary technique and dinner theatre, it’s one of those rare dishes where guests often reach for their phones before their cutlery.

Dessert, unsurprisingly, refuses to leave quietly. Crêpes Suzette arrives with its familiar flambé flourish, Cerises Jubilé follows suit, while the restaurant’s much-loved Sabayon du Chalet—fondly nicknamed the ‘dancing dessert’ by generations of diners—returns to close the evening on a playful note.

The CNJ Trio

Adding another layer of nostalgia is the return of the CNJ Trio, whose evergreen repertoire once provided the soundtrack to countless evenings at Chalet. Returning guests may find themselves humming along, while younger diners get a glimpse of the kind of live entertainment that once defined our city’s grand hotel restaurants.

For those who remember Chalet, it’s a welcome reunion. For everyone else, it’s a chance to discover why an old-school dining room still has a few tricks up its impeccably starched sleeve.
