Where To Find Boozy Local Desserts In Klang Valley

Patrick LohEat1 month ago

Your childhood desserts have grown up. Here’s where to find tau fu fah, cendol, and ice cream with a splash of something stronger.

Western and Korean desserts may be having a moment, but let’s be honest: Malaysians will always have room for cendol, tau fu fah and gula Melaka. And now, some of our favourite local sweets are getting a rather adult upgrade.

Across the country, bars and dessert makers are giving familiar flavours a boozy twist, folding rum, gin, whisky and liqueurs into everything from silky tau fu fah to icy cendol. Think of it as dessert—with a little more spirit. Here are some places putting alcohol into Malaysian desserts, because sometimes one cocktail just isn’t enough.

Sanctuary 38

Boozy Desserts

Tucked away in Desa Sri Hartamas, Sanctuary 38 is doing Malaysian desserts with alcohol. Its pandan tau fu fah comes silky and delicate, paired with dark rum and gula Melaka for a dessert that feels familiar but decidedly less innocent.

There is also ai yu jelly paired with spiced rum, sour plum gin, and pat poh syrup, while the sago gula Melaka gets an extra kick from spiced rum and coconut liqueur.

Soma Cocktail Bar

Boozy Desserts

Tau fu fah seems to have found an unlikely second career at cocktail bars, and Soma is another spot making a strong case for it. Its silky version comes with dark rum and ginger syrup, turning the humble soy pudding into something far more mischievous.

Also on the menu is Guilinggao paired with chrysanthemum tea gin. And if you happen to visit during the right season, keep an eye out for tangyuan served with Irish whiskey.

JungleBird

JungleBird takes the Piña Colada and gives it a Malaysian twist. Its Cendol Colada brings together the familiar flavours of cendol—pandan and coconut—with Diplomático Mantuano, a Venezuelan dark rum that adds warmth and depth to the tropical mix. It’s part cocktail, part dessert and entirely suited to a humid Kuala Lumpur afternoon.

Cake Tella

Cake Tella has never been one to keep things entirely sober. The dessert maker regularly plays with locally inspired flavours and spirits, with recent creations including mooncakes infused with gin and whisky. Beyond mooncake season, it is also known for incorporating cognac and rum into its cakes. Consider it proof that alcohol and dessert have a long-term relationship.

The Ice Cream Bar

Not strictly Malaysian in flavour, but certainly worth saving room for, The Ice Cream Bar specialises in alcoholic ice cream for those who prefer their spirits frozen.

Expect flavours built around whisky and cognac, often paired with coffee and chocolate, with some available in cake form too. Ideal for birthdays, celebrations, or simply those evenings when a scoop feels more appropriate than a glass.
