Hanwoo Beef Is Now At Mercato TRX And Here’s What You Need To Know

Think you know premium beef? Meet Hanwoo, Korea’s prized native breed, now available at Mercato TRX in the exceptionally rare MiGyeongSan variety.

Steaks such as Angus and wagyu have long been fixtures on restaurant menus. But if you’ve already worked your way through those familiar names, there’s another beef worth getting acquainted with: Korean Hanwoo beef.

What’s Hanwoo Beef?

Unlike wagyu, which is now raised in countries around the world, Hanwoo is a native Korean cattle breed that has been kept genetically pure on the Korean Peninsula for thousands of years. Korea takes its Hanwoo seriously. The breed is protected by a strict, government-enforced national database and traceability system, keeping a close eye on its lineage from farm to table. While wagyu refers to four Japanese cattle breeds that are now raised internationally, Hanwoo refers to one specific native Korean breed with tightly controlled bloodlines.

Hanwoo is now making its way onto Malaysian shopping lists, with MiGyeongSan Hanwoo landing at Mercato TRX. What makes this particular Hanwoo especially interesting is its rarity. MiGyeongSan Hanwoo comes exclusively from young female heifers that have never given birth or been milked. This virgin cattle designation accounts for just around 0.01% of the total Hanwoo beef supply.

Known for its fine marbling, tenderness, and rich flavour, MiGyeongSan Hanwoo is available at Mercato TRX in cuts including beef loin and short plate, alongside Korean favourites such as bulgogi, galbi, and chadolbaegi. Planning a Korean barbecue? Hot pot? Or simply wondering what happens when you give Tuesday night dinner a serious upgrade? You’re covered.

BeefK by Olivia Lee brings in the good stuff

The launch is organised by BeefK by Olivia Lee in collaboration with Culina and Mercato Malaysia, and it comes with a side of Korean butchery expertise. Korean meat masters Lim Chiho and Kim Soonkwon were on hand for the first two days, conducting live butchery demonstrations and tastings. Additionally, the Hanwoo range is expected to arrive at Mercato 1 Mont Kiara by the end of September, bringing the Korean beef experience a little closer to home.

Yes, it’s Halal-certified

For Malaysian shoppers, there’s another important box ticked: the beef is Halal-certified, with selected cuts priced from RM405.90 to RM869.99 per 1kg, with 10% off during the promotional period. We suggest you give Hanwoo beef a try, as you might just get as obsessed with it as everyone else and become a Hanwoo convert yourself.
