Outdoorsy Café Comforts: 3 Confessions Of An Incurable Café Romantic

Vanessa LDrink, Eat10 months ago

Playing the café romantic, let’s look at why outdoorsy corners are a café curiosity to wonder about.

Cafés. Eateries. Coffee shops. The names are about as endless as the homely scene, but it’s one that you cannot tire of. Ever hot out of the oven with mix menus, hotshot drinks, seasonal themes and settings, and revamped spaces, there are always places to check out, photos to take, and memories to make. Malaysia’s pretty charmed with all that’s coming in hot, which I have no complaints nor confessions on.

Still, discovering a spot doesn’t come cheap. It’s the details of what they can cook up, the dirt on how the hospitality is, and every so often, if the distance is worth journeying. Picture this, that shy cup on the corner street isn’t always the sweetest thing to stumble into—sometimes it is just a pretty doorway to a mediocre sip. But we’re not filtering this mess today, not really, not yet.

Straight and sunny, this is about coffeehouses with a dose of sunlight beside your table. Call it café romanticism if you like—I’ve never seen the point of paying extra for a vitamin D fix, especially when caffeine is already running the show. Still, this little episode came about thanks to a friend’s radiant fondness for outdoor-friendly spots, and that’s where we’re headed.

Breezes, beans, and café corners

There’s something in the air—outside, I mean—that may sing to your pulse as opposed to indoors. Particularly on days with taut shoulders and anxiety straining the mental meter, this is a pause in whatever was fraying. Just a step out into that quiet bit of unlit air, tucking yourself under a sunshade, away from the furore in there.

It’s moments like this that lay your mind to rest—a sensory reset, so to say. Like, what can your eyes catch if they weren’t fixed on a screen? Or your ears if there was no playlist to paw at? For someone like myself, a space outside is much like a stage set up for Mother Nature to perform her pieces. More than her warm embrace, it’s breezes teasing the leaves, commentaries piping between birds, and the sun-stained sky like an artwork hung in plain sight.

Maybe a setting such as Botanica+Co at Bamboo Hills, verdant, vibrant, and simply a soundscape for open-air enthusiasts. Perched above in an enclave, is a glass ceiling catching sun as well as starlight, with lush and leafy foliage swaddling like sprigs too shy to say hello. This eatery is a pause away from the city rush, while some thrive in the hurry, here a soft hum—yawning in the morning air, musing over beans and breezes.

Think of it as a soft reminder for those whose spark is running dry. Often, certain cafés feel more like a trip to the North Pole than a nook to slip into. Not even a cuppa is hot enough to warn the cold off—which is what brings my cursor to why an outdoorsy patch feels less like a want and more like a need. The temperature shift may not be a critical case; still, it’s the small things that matter. A scene that chills more than it comforts is an easy miss—at least, that’s how it tends to play out on my side.

Sunblock for the creative block

The day’s warm cast spills across the back deck, a sunlit wash that feels like a much-needed exhale—paired with a temperature that meets you halfway. A slump will find me wherever I am, that much is true, but a space that feels irie is one where my mind is free to untie itself. And a sunny pocket—part breeze, part ease—sounds about right.

For example, L Èden Bistronomy in KL. They may be a fresh face on the block, but they’re quite a find with a lovely terrace nook. Draping sunshades, a backyard pool like a sunken stage to wine and dine on, and foliage that bows as zephyrs visit. You cannot tell me this isn’t the perfect playground for creatives to let their pens off the leash.

Taking a shot… or a snap

Okay, there may be another reason to frequent such outdoorsy sanctuaries. Taking the shot… or snap! It’s an idea that comes naturally, for what could rival the sun in natural radiance and sharpness? Be it that the heat isn’t everyone’s vibe, but to have a person or two who blooms like sunflowers do is quite a sight to behold. Plus, eye it this way, the more snaps and shares that make their way around social media, the further the café can wave at visitors to their route!

If you think about it, a seat outside is live advertising in action. Imagine an angle fixed on tables out in the open—alive with mirth, awash in chatter and cheers. That alone is a moment worth someone’s attention. Now frame it in the everyday picture, with a biting aroma sneaking into the mix. Drinks glisten in icy sweat under the rays; dishes arrive spiced and scented, like a private masterpiece plated for every passerby to admire.
