Raise A Glass With Penfolds This Mid-Autumn

Bring out the mooncakes, gather the family, and uncork something worth sharing. Penfolds’ limited-edition gift packs pairs Bin 389 and Bin 407 with the spirit of the season.

Mid-Autumn festival has always been a good excuse to gather around a table, pass plates, uncork something nice, and stay a little longer than planned. This year, Penfolds is bringing wine into the reunion with two limited-edition gift packs featuring its best-known reds: Bin 389 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz and Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wrapped in red and gold, the gift pack gives the two bottles a suitably festive dressing without straying too far from Penfolds’ polished aesthetic. More importantly, both wines have the structure and versatility to hold their own alongside the flavours of a celebratory Asian spread.

Bin 389 is the one with the particularly interesting backstory. First made in 1960 by Max Schubert—the winemaker behind Penfolds Grange—it was developed as a more approachable expression of the same blending philosophy. Some of its components were matured in barrels that had previously held Grange, earning it the affectionate nickname ‘Baby Grange’.

There’s nothing particularly babyish about the wine, though. A Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz blend, Bin 389 brings ripe fruit, firm tannins, and a velvety texture, with enough depth to work beautifully with richer dishes.

Bin 407, meanwhile, puts Cabernet Sauvignon front and centre. Inspired by the techniques and structure of Bin 707, it takes a more medium-bodied approach, with red fruit, gentle spice, and a rounded finish. It’s the sort of bottle that can comfortably move from dinner conversation to second pour.

With more than 180 years of Australian winemaking behind the label, Penfolds has plenty of history to bring to the table. This Mid-Autumn festival, it packages two very different expressions of that legacy into gifts with the right kind of spirit. Besides, it’s proof that sometimes, the best way to celebrate reunion is simply to bring good wine to the table for all to enjoy.
