From bubbling French onion soup and handmade pastas to jazz kissaten culture and champagne under city lights, Yap Ah Shak House turns a single Chow Kit address into an all-day dining playground.
KL moves at the speed of a dinner reservation. One week it’s a coffee counter hidden behind a florist, the next it’s a six-concept dining hub everyone can’t wait to discover. In a city where eating is practically a national sport, new F&B spots appear faster than group chats can decide where to go.
One destination stirring up the scene is Yap Ah Shak House in Chow Kit—a sprawling lifestyle address tucked along Jalan Yap Ah Shak. Think French bistro elegance, Italian comfort, Japanese jazz culture, cocktail bars, live music, art spaces, and co-working corners, all stitched together under one roof. It feels less like a dining hub and more like a very stylish rabbit hole you willingly disappear into for hours.

If your idea of happiness involves butter, wine, and the smell of onions caramelising for what feels like eternity, Brasserie Alma deserves your immediate attention. The French kitchen remains faithful to its classical French backbone, but updated with a modern sensibility.
The French Onion Soup is rich, deeply savoury, and unapologetically indulgent—thick broth, sweet softened onions, bubbling Gruyère, the whole comforting affair. Standout mains include the Black Angus tenderloin cooked to medium-rare perfection, paired with peppercorn sauce and herbed butter; and the sole dressed in capers and lemon butter sauce with French beans, keeping your diet just a little respectable.
Desserts, naturally, enter with drama. The Soufflé Grand Marnier, airy orange soufflé served with chocolate and vanilla ice cream, arrives with tableside theatrics that make every nearby diner look over in envy. Better still, pair with Le Tertre Du Lys D’or’s Sauternes, a luscious sweet white wine made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, for a decadent finish.
As the night stretches on, The Velvet Room (the hidden lounge tucked behind the main dining room) slips into jazz mode, turning Brasserie Alma into the kind of place where one last drink somehow becomes six.

Italian food already knows how to flirt. Osteria Gamberoni simply turns the charm up slightly for local palates without losing its soul. The handmade pastas alone are reason enough to visit.
Our absolute favourites: Tagliolini Gamberi e Limone (tagliolini pasta with tiger prawns, lemon cream & ricotta); Risotto Al Nero (squid ink risotto with seabass flakes, prawn, squid, and clams); Ravioli Granchio (ravioli with crab meat and crab bisque sauce); Reginette All’agnello (reginette pasta with slow-cooked lamb ragu and parmesan).
And because restraint has no place here, the Roman-style thin crust pizzas—especially the Quattro Formaggi and Prosciutto e Tartufo—make a convincing argument for ordering ‘just one more dish’.

Kiku isn’t just a Japanese eatery. It’s also a jazz kissaten lounge—a concept born in Japan in the 1920s where people gathered to listen to vinyl records on serious sound systems while quietly nursing drinks and meals.
Here, that nostalgic listening culture meets comfort food with a slightly playful edge. The menu moves between crisp sandos stuffed with Gyu Katsu or Tori Katsu; comforting bowls of ramen layered with bone broth, mirin, leek, and rayu; alongside donburi options like Oyakodon Katsu Curry Don and Miso Halibut Don.
Feeling less traditional? The Ebi Burger with wasabi, Striploin Burger, Sakura Ebi pizza, and Mentaiko pasta happily blur the lines. And yes, there are highballs because a jazz lounge without one would feel almost illegal.

Southeast Asian cooking has never been shy. It’s loud with herbs, spices, and deeply generous with flavour. Kapitan’s Club leans right into that spirit, borrowing influences from across the region like Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Malaysia while slipping in subtle Japanese touches along the way.
On the menu: Nasi Lemak Kapitan, Wok-tossed Udon with tiger prawns, and Katong Laksa will tantalise your tastebuds. There’s also a wide array of appetisers including bergedil, sate ayam, otak-otak, chicken lorbak, tiger prawns wontons, and ebiko on sourdough. Finish your meal with a Cham C because sometimes the most Malaysian ending is still the best one.

For all our devotion to Malaysian food, there are days when only a proper British-style comfort plate will do. The Botanical Arts Society handles that craving with a polished brunch-and-teahouse approach that feels refined without becoming stuffy.
The menu swings between lighter options like soup of the day, Cobb Salad, steak sandwiches, and tuna melts, before diving into heartier fare including Black Angus burgers, Fish and Chips, Cottage Pie, and The Late Breakfast.
Afternoon tea regulars are present too. Carrot cake, walnut brownies, and banoffee pie are all waiting patiently beside cups of tea and conversations that unfold with easy warmth.
